Luna

Lloyd Werft in Bremerhaven delivered Luna in 2010 as a successor to the explorer Le Grand Bleu. She has an ice-class steel hull, seven generators feeding electric propulsion motors and a published range of 9,500 nautical miles at 16.8 knots. Her reported voyages took her to the Mediterranean, Cuba and Dubai, not to polar ice. In 2026 she is in a refit in Hamburg and on the market.

In short

Luna is one of the largest yachts built for expedition use: 114.2 metres and 5,655 GT, delivered by Lloyd Werft in 2010 for Roman Abramovich as a successor to his explorer Le Grand Bleu (Boat International). Her steel hull is ice-classed to Lloyd's Register standards, although no notation has been published, and her seven generators were sized to push her through shallow ice (YachtBuyer, Boat International). She carries fuel for 9,500 nautical miles at 16.8 knots (Boat International), has two MCA-certified helipads (Boat International) and a fleet of six tenders (Eastwind Yachts). Boat International noted that she did little exploring in her first years, and no polar voyage of hers has been reported; since June 2025 she has been for sale (Boat International, Boat International).

Naval architecture by Lloyd Werft; exterior by Frank Neubelt of the Newcruise studio, who called the look “boy cool”; interior by Donald Starkey, who joined when the yacht was about 70 per cent complete and added a dining room and more headroom
Build history
Construction began in mid-2007 to Lloyd's Register standards; she was launched in October 2009 and delivered in 2010. She was commissioned by Roman Abramovich as a successor to his 113-metre explorer Le Grand Bleu. Ice class
Ice-class steel hull built to Lloyd's Register standards; the exact notation is not published by the builder, the brokers or the yachting press
In ice, in practice
Without a published notation there is no rated ice thickness for her hull. Boat International reported that her generating power was designed to nudge her through shallow ice, and YachtBuyer describes her as able to navigate shallow ice. For scale, the lightest Finnish-Swedish Baltic ice class is designed for level ice up to 0.4 m thick with icebreaker help when needed. No voyage of hers in polar ice has been reported

A hospital, a swimmer-recovery system, full HD CCTV, anti-drone equipment, diver-detection sonar and missile-detection systems, fitted under her second owner
Refits
After a season in the Mediterranean with her new owners, she went to German Dry Docks in Bremerhaven in late 2014 for a 14-month refit of about 130 jobs that took in her five-year survey. The hull was sandblasted, faired with more than 20 tonnes of filler and repainted in “Luna Blue” by 70–80 painters over eight months; the shafts were surveyed, seals and bearings renewed and the ballast tank system separated. Boat International puts the cost at €50 million. A further refit followed in 2021, and a third was under way in Hamburg in 2026 Boat International dates the first refit to 2015/16, the broker to 2016
Where she has been
She did little exploring between 2010 and 2014. Her owner's representative described arriving in Cuba on board, and the beach club holds a sculpture found in Greece on one of her trips (reported in 2016). She was later impounded in Dubai until a court there returned her to her owner in March 2019, and spent several years in the Port of Dubai before leaving for the Mediterranean in 2021. She was frozen in Germany in June 2022, and in February 2026 she was in Hamburg for a refit
