What is an explorer yacht?
Definition, criteria and how it differs from an expedition yacht
Published prices with their dates, and what it costs to run an explorer yacht.

New explorer yachts are built to order and few prices are published. The new explorers priced on YachtBuyer's explorer page run from £9.95 million for the 27.4 m Arksen 85 to €99 million for a 60 m Damen Xplorer 60 due in 2030 (YachtBuyer, October 2026). Fraser says industry benchmarks put annual running costs at 10–15% of a yacht's purchase value, crew included (Fraser, April 2026).
Only prices with a source and a date are listed here. Where a builder does not publish a price and we found none in a checked source, the table says so.
YachtBuyer calls the "10% rule" an often-quoted theory: annual running costs of about 10% of the purchase price, covering fuel, mooring fees and maintenance (YachtBuyer). Fraser puts the industry benchmark higher, at 10–15% of purchase value, covering crew salaries, fuel, berthing, insurance and routine maintenance (Fraser). Boat International breaks out two items: industry experts typically estimate maintenance at 5–10% of the original purchase price, and insurance costs 0.5–2% of the yacht's value a year (Boat International).
YachtBuyer calls the rule mildly useful for new owner-operated yachts but says it has major shortcomings for larger, crewed or older yachts: as a yacht ages its value usually falls while its running costs rise, so the rule can become obsolete or even misleading (YachtBuyer).
Prices move. The Arksen 85 was announced at £5.95 million ex VAT in 2021 (MBY, data 2021), reported at £6.5 million in an article published in May 2023 and first printed in July 2022 (MBY, data 2023) and is listed from £9.95 million in 2026 (Arksen). The 2023 and 2026 sources do not say whether VAT is included. For the models themselves, see Explorer yacht builders and the explorer yachts list.
